Nightside Distilling, the good stuff in Edgewood

Updated: Jul 26, 2019

My next review is the Nightside Distillery located in Edgewood. This is the smallest distillery I have visited and has a very good lineup top to bottom

Nightside is located at 2908 Meridian Avenue East, it is in the back of a small industrial building. Mike was behind the counter and was very happy to tell you about all their products. I sampled a variety of items and was pleasantly surprised a couple times. Let’s review their products.

My first sample was the Apple Pie vodka. It has a pleasant apple flavor and the right amount of cinnamon. I want to use some to make an apple pie. I rate it a 4 out of 5.

Next I tried the Fruit Punch vodka. Need something to spike the punch? This would be perfect. This would also be nice for cool summer drinks. I give it a 4.2 out of 5 and I’m not a fan of anything fruit punch.

Next was the first surprise. Mike poured me a sample of the Espresso vodka. Just the right amount of sweet and a light coffee flavor. I would like this in my morning coffee. Add some cream and you would have a perfect replacement for Bailey’s. I give it a 3.9 out of 5.

Lemon Drop vodka was up next. Easily the smoothest lemon flavored liqueur I have tasted. This would be an excellent addition to lemonade. I would like to see a pink lemonade version. Hint hint. I give it a 4.5 out of 5.

My next sample was the reason for visiting Nightside, a product they call Whodka. They take their vodka and age it in oak barrels. It has a very light oak flavor and can be had straight with no problems. I was tempted to buy a bottle but I already have a good supply of vodka. I might try to age a bottle of mine in an oak barrel. I give it a 3.5 out of 5.

Up next was my biggest surprise. First, I don’t like gin. I have tried a number of brands and none were to my liking. Nightside's is made with a variety of items and juniper, the main flavoring of most gins, is somewhere in the middle. I found this very drinkable straight and would love to try it in a martini. This will likely be a purchase I make sooner rather than later. I give it a 4.9 out of 5.

My last 2 samples were the 2 types of bourbon Nightside makes. Both recipes are the same but one is aged in a barrel with a #4 char, the other in a barrel with a #5 char. The #4 char bourbon is clean and smooth and would be enjoyed by those who like a lighter flavored bourbon. The #5 char bourbon is noticeably darker in the bottle. It has a stronger flavor and you can taste the oak. This bourbon went down just right. At this time I can think of only one other distiller in Washington that makes a better bourbon. I rate the #4 char bourbon a 4.1 out of 5, the #5 gets a 4.7 out of 5.

After 8 samples I decided to stop, I still had to drive home. Nightside also makes other products and if they are the same quality of what I tasted, they will all be very good. Other products include 2 versions of vodka and an aquavit. Nightside is only a 20 minute drive from home, I will be visiting again. Nightside is only open on Friday and Saturday. They also have a number of special event throughout the year.
